5 Bedrooms £595,000

The Old Vicarage, Thursby, Carlisle

An exceptional Grade II listed former vicarage of grand proportions with superb period features. The residence has five bedrooms, two bathrooms, three receptions rooms and has planning permission for a conservatory. Set on a large elevated south facing plot in the desirable village of Thursby, it is within easy reach of the A595 and only five miles from Carlisle.

The original property is believed to date back to 1428, with major remodelling done late 19th Century in the Georgian architectural style. Many wonderful period features remain, including arched doorways, sash windows with shutters and decorative panelling in grand proportioned rooms. The property is beautifully decorated and presented throughout, with exposed wood flooring in the entrance hall and drawing room and ornate open fireplaces in most of the rooms.

The front entrance leads into a vestibule area and then into a spacious entrance hall with grand staircase, cloakroom and beautiful stained glass door with fan light. Off the entrance hall is a magnificent drawing room of stately proportions, with elegant wall panelling, window seats and marble fireplace - an impressive space for entertaining guests. At the rear of the ground floor is a formal dining room, with a stylish parlour off the kitchen, which could serve as an informal living/dining space.

The kitchen has fitted cabinets by Schuller with granite worktop, built in fridge-freezer, oven and hob and a traditional Rayburn range. A back porch leads out to a sheltered patio area with granted planning permission for a conservatory/sunroom here.

Off the spacious first floor landing are four double bedrooms, two of particularly large proportions. The beautifully decorated house bathroom has a large shower unit and a luxurious roll top bath and there is an additional ensuite shower room in one of the front bedrooms. A door opens into a hidden staircase leading up to a recently converted attic bedroom with raised hobby room/snug.

The Old Vicarage sits on an extensive elevated plot with beautiful gardens on all sides of the south facing property. A gated sweeping driveway leads up to a large parking area and a recently refurbished detached garage with utility room. The main garden is to the front of the property with formal split level lawns, a magnificent copper beach tree and wonderful views of the neighbouring church.

There are sheltered walled gardens at the rear of the property with a raised pond and paved areas for dining and entertaining. On the east side of the property is an additional large lawn garden with fruit trees and greenhouse, which was formerly a kitchen garden. The garden is filled with colour in spring and summer with spring bulbs, rhododendrons, hydrangea and a beautiful wisteria on the front of the house.

The Old Vicarage is located in a peaceful setting on the edge of the picturesque village of Thursby. The village has a school and pub, with further amenities, train station and Ofsted ‘outstanding’ accredited secondary school nearby in Wigton. The village is located midway between the Solway Coast AONB and the Lake District National Park, with beautiful open countryside on the doorstep. The nearby A595 offers excellent transport links to the city of Carlisle, with West Coast Main Line station offering high speed travel to London, Manchester, Glasgow and other major cities.
