From Penrith take the A66 west, go straight over roundabout at Rheged and continue along.  Turn left for Matterdale, continue along into Matterdale End and at junction turn left (A5091). When entering Dockray turn right at Royal Hotel.  Hilltoft Barn is just past the hotel on the right hand side
